657Data Mining
Universidad Diego Portales
In this course, students learn how to process large amounts of data to make informed decisions in different types of organisations and conduct research in the social sciences. Students learn the basics of data mining related to data cleaning and processing, imputation techniques, outlier detection, version control with Git, and exploratory and cluster analysis. In addition, predictive modelling using algorithms and decision trees, model assembly techniques, as well as a brief approach to NLP and LLMs are explored.
PhD in Management Science
Universidad Diego Portales
I am a member of the Academic Board and act as supervisor for this programme. The PhD in Management Science at Universidad Diego Portales aims to train autonomous and excellent researchers with theoretical and practical knowledge in the use of quantitative methods and tools. This will enable them to identify, manage, and solve problems in the field of Business Management. Upon completion of the programme, students are expected to: (1) conduct high-level research, both theoretical and applied, within the program’s research lines; (2) develop and disseminate new methodologies that can be useful in both academic and business environments; (3) solve applied problems using advanced tools related to the program’s research areas; (4) disseminate research findings through national and international scientific channels; and (5) develop academic projects that contribute new knowledge to the field of the programme. This programme also stands out for its emphasis on quantitative data analysis methodologies, aiming to develop methods to apply, evaluate, and develop econometric, psychometric, and multivariate methods.
Political Economy
Universidad Diego Portales
This course aims to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the role of the state, institutions, and the market in resource allocation. Based on the institutional perspective, analytical tools are obtained to understand the decisions made by individuals, governments, and other social actors. We evaluate the impact of institutions on the evolution of societies over time and how to design, or at least re-examine, more effective and fair institutions. In this context, key models from the literature on political economy are reviewed. Therefore, the course provides a guide to understanding both challenges and opportunities, unveiling the root causes of global problems, the interrelation between state, market and institutions, as well as tensions and the points of encounter between governance, development and social change. In this way, students are able not only to understand but also to participate critically in the search for answers and solutions to the challenges facing the contemporary world.
Institutions of Governance and Development
Leiden University
Why do some nations thrive economically while others struggle? Why do seemingly robust political systems fail to address urgent problems effectively? Why are human rights a priority in certain jurisdictions but not in others? Furthermore, why do some diverse communities cooperate peacefully, whereas others are mired in tension or violence? As an introduction to governance, economics, and development, this course provides a foundational scholarly approach to such questions by emphasising formal and informal rules that guide social interaction.
Political Science II
Universidad de Santiago de Chile
This course addresses the scope, content and methods of various approaches related to political science, with a focus on the mainstream of the discipline with contemporary political science and then addressing how these approaches are reflected in the study of the state, government, and democracy.
